Review: Lavin’s writing strikes an admirable balance between whimsical fantasy and meaningful messaging. Her storytelling is accessible, fast-paced, and sprinkled with humor and heart. The world she creates—from the icy forests to the skies above—is richly imagined yet grounded in urgent global realities. While the prose is inviting for younger readers, it doesn’t shy away from planting seeds of awareness about climate action and ecological stewardship.
What elevates Molly Ribbons: The Arctic City Flyer beyond many seasonal or adventure books is its call to action. It doesn’t just entertain—it inspires. It encourages children to see themselves as stewards of the Earth, capable of making a difference no matter their age. For parents and educators, the book offers an excellent platform to spark meaningful conversations about sustainability, teamwork, and resilience.
Sofia began to write short stories at a young age. The theme of a valiant elf who challenged old world gifting beliefs came about during the 4th grade. The assignment was to write a letter to Santa and describe the reasons that this elf is the best employee for driving the sleigh. Well into COVID and with time and creativity on her hands, Sofia kept writing after turning in her short story. She connected with her father, Richard, and Environmental Scientist, and rationalized that creating more "toys" that turn into trash when discarded is not the best use of resources. The ongoing environmental climate and deteriorating ice capes inspired them both to expand on the short story, adding additional pals for the adventure while also educating children and parents, and anyone who cares about the same topics.
